About American Style Rumba

American Style Rumba is part of the American Rhythm ballroom dance syllabus and is often referred to as the “dance of romance.” Originating in the early twentieth century, it is characterized by its smooth, rhythmic movement and expressive style.

Rumba is defined by its signature box step and distinctive “slow-quick-quick” timing. Unlike the slower, more stationary International Style Rumba, American Style Rumba features continuous movement around the dance floor and a slightly faster tempo. Dancers develop balance, coordination, musicality, and partner connection while learning the fundamentals of this popular social and competitive dance.

Students will learn proper posture, footwork, timing, lead and follow techniques, and the characteristic Cuban motion that gives Rumba its unique look and feel.

What to Wear

  • Wear comfortable clothing that allows freedom of movement and flexibility.
  • Choose shoes that you can comfortably walk and dance in.
  • If you are not comfortable walking in heels, we recommend selecting a flat shoe or a lower, more stable heel.
  • If you are looking for practice shoes, we recommend The Dancer In You.

Please Note: Proper ballroom dance shoes have suede soles and should not be worn outdoors, as this can damage the suede and affect performance on the dance floor.
